Best eSIM for Vietnam

Terraced green rice paddies and karst mountains in northern Vietnam with farmers at work

Vietnam quietly has some of the fastest and cheapest mobile data in the region, which makes it a superb eSIM destination. Whether you are weaving through Hanoi's old quarter on the back of a motorbike taxi or cruising Ha Long Bay, staying connected is easy and inexpensive — and an eSIM spares you the registration paperwork a physical SIM sometimes involves.

Coverage along the whole country

Vietnam's main carrier, Viettel, has invested heavily in coverage, and it shows. Travel eSIMs running on Viettel and the other major networks give you strong, fast signal in Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City, and surprisingly good coverage along the long overland route that connects them. Even on sleeper trains and coastal highways, you will usually keep a workable connection.

As anywhere, the exceptions are the remote highlands around Sapa and Ha Giang, and out on the water in Ha Long and Lan Ha bays, where signal comes and goes. Download offline maps for those legs and you will not miss a beat.

How much data do you need?

Because data is so cheap here, generous plans cost very little. For a typical week split between two or three cities, 3 to 5 GB is comfortable alongside hotel WiFi. If you are doing the classic north-to-south journey over two weeks, sharing your location with travel buddies and streaming on long transfers, an unlimited plan is inexpensive insurance.

Our pick for Vietnam

A Vietnam or Southeast Asia regional plan from a provider like Airalo covers the full north-to-south route. Buy and install before departure, then activate when you land.

Setup tips specific to Vietnam

Install over WiFi before you fly and leave the plan to activate on arrival. After landing, switch off airplane mode, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line, and wait a moment for it to connect to a Vietnamese partner network. If your itinerary crosses into Cambodia or Laos, a regional plan saves swapping eSIMs at each border.

The verdict

Vietnam delivers fast, cheap, widespread data — close to ideal eSIM territory. Grab a plan with comfortable headroom for a long overland trip, keep offline maps handy for the highlands and the bays, and you will stay connected from the Hanoi train tracks to the Mekong Delta.
